The material of choice for food packaging

Steel, a sustainable solution to reduce food waste

Food packed in steel stays fresh for longer, retains its appearance and flavour and is less likely to be damaged, spoiled, or unnecessarily wasted. No other packaging material equals steel’s strength, total barrier properties or shelf life.

Discover in this new video by APEAL how steel can be a sustainable solution to reduce food waste.

Steel is the most recycled material in Europe, and its contribution to wider environmental and resource efficiency is recognised:

“Packaging materials have an important role to play by protecting products and extending their shelf life”, commented Alexis Van Maercke, secretary general of APEAL.

“Steel packaging in particular is impact resistant, puncture resistant and virtually unbreakable with a unique 100% barrier against light, water and air that protects products from damage or spoilage. Requiring no energy during transport or storage, steel packaging protects products for up to 5 years,” he added.

Cans made of steel can protect valuable minerals and nutrients in vegetables, so not only using steel for food packaging contributes to sustainability, the food itself is better protected.
