Sanitary ends are highly standardised products which can satisfy any market requiring round shapes or demanding retort conditions. Proper seaming of the ends onto the can bodies guarantees leak-proof packaging.
Pressure resistance and seaming ability are the most important factors when selecting a steel grade for this application. The pressure resistance of the ends comes from a combination of the steel’s thickness and hardness. In extreme applications, the minimum metal elongation should be calculated.
Continuously annealed high-strength packaging steel grades are recommended (TH620) except in cases where the seaming is very large (Sefel 0I).
If the steel will be used in a multi-die press (MTD), a minimum level of ductility is required. For these applications, ArcelorMittal has developed a specific, formable high strength steel (TH620A).
Metallic coating: Tin coating or ECCS. ECCS can be used when the can’s contents are not aggressive.
