Cheers with steel

ArcelorMittal Europe – Flat Products packaging division is a major supplier of tinplate for discs - the top part of the wire hood used by champagne producers to secure the cork.

ArcelorMittal Packaging is the market leader for steel for packaging and one of its end products is the disc, an essential part of the wire hood for bottling. Our main client SPARFLEX, who produces several hundreds of millions of the disc per year, uses tinplate produced by ArcelorMittal. These discs are destined for wire hoods not only for Champagnes, but also sparkling wines, spirits and other prestige beverages.

A French family business established in the heart of the Champagne region since 1984, SPARFLEX supplies clients worldwide, producing brand image for bottle packaging. Research and development is at the core of their business. The drive to provide the best end products to their clients, such as Champagne Taittinger, Bollinger, Laurent Perrier and Pommery in the champagne industry or Leffe and Chimay for the beer industry, made SPARFLEX choose ArcelorMittal, a supplier who can deliver the highest quality material.

The wire hood was originally created to satisfy optimal champagne packaging constraints. Today, it has become as well a genuine collector item for connoisseurs and a marketing asset. The discs are made-to-measure and personalized using different printing techniques, colored wire, stamping, etc. to make them a unique identifier specific to each Champagne House. That is one of the main reasons for choosing tinplate made by ArcelorMittal which is perfectly adapted for printing.

Without knowing it, millions of people have an ArcelorMittal product in their hands everyday!  The little disc is vital for holding the cork in place and helps along with the wire to keep the fizz of the drink inside of the bottle. Champagne is the signature French drink, but excellent sparkling wines in Italy, Spain, South Africa and Australia use discs for wire hoods made with ArcelorMittal steel. Moreover, it is used greatly for 75cl craft beer bottles, very popular in Europe and the USA.

ArcelorMittal steel for packaging is particularly suited for this type of product, it is anti-corrosive, a necessity for products in contact with any alimentation and stored in underground cellars. Plus, our tinplates have excellent resistance for stamping, an important part of the disc production. Finally, they are perfectly suited for coating and printing; these discs carry the name of the bottled product.

So this festive season, when you hear a cork pop, imagine there is a little piece of ArcelorMittal behind it!
