Packaging webinar on slim and smart 3-piece can bodies made with ArcelorMittal steels

After the successful first edition of the packaging webinar on sustainable steel closures for the packaging industry held in partnership with The Canmaker, we were happy to offer you the second session where we explored what’s in it for you when it comes to 3-piece can bodies.

Our speaker Gilles Mangin, Packaging Product Development Engineer at ArcelorMittal Global R&D presented on the 31^st of October 2024 at 3:30pm CET an informative 30 minutes session followed by an interactive 15 minutes Q&A.

During the webinar the audience learned about the importance of a 3-piece can body, the core component for food, aerosol and general line steel packaging. In fact, a 3-piece can body represents around 2/3 of the total metal packaging volume in a variety of forms going from the tiny 1/10 food can to the big pail can.

Then, we discovered the importance of reliability and material usage in packaging, including downgauging, as innovation and lightweighting of a 3-piece can body have been a motto of the steel packaging industry for a while now. Nowadays with the need to keep on reducing the environmental footprint of any packaging, the path is far from reaching its end.

Therefore, ArcelorMittal dedicates a technical team to support the innovation, proposing to develop new solutions in a partnership spirit with its customers.

Our most recent successes have been on the thickness reduction of the aerosol bodies or some formats of a 3-piece food can, as well as the technical design of distinctive 3-piece shaped cans. Moreover, the 3-piece bodies had been the solution of the very first metal can, but still has room for improvement either by optimising the canmaking design or by using high strength steels by ArcelorMittal.
