The Aerosol and Dispensing Forum (ADF) 2025 took place in Paris, France, on 28 and 29 January 2025. ArcelorMittal Europe was present there to showcase the newest sustainability developments in our packaging steels.
Preparing for a Chromium-Free Future in Packaging Coatings
Under the EU’s REACH legislation, Chromium Cr(VI) must be removed from the tinplate passivation process by 2027. ArcelorMittal has been preparing for the change for some time, and has built up its Chromium-Free Passivation Alternative (CFPA) production capacity to accommodate full customer demand from 2025. Several thousand tonnes of CFPA have already been produced and delivered to customers for testing in various applications. If your products are impacted by REACH, now is the time to act. Our team was eager to discuss our customers' current needs during the two days of the event.
ArcelorMittal Europe provided more details of our low tin coated steel (LTS) which can be used as in place of Electrolytic Chromium Coated Steel (ECCS). ArcelorMittal’s LTS solution is the only 100-percent Cr-free alternative already on the market.
ArcelorMittal Europe is also developing a range of Bisphenol-A Non-Intended (BPA-NI) coil coated products which are also free of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). A BPA-NI coil coated steel for aerosol mounting cups is already available. It can be supplied using our CFPA tinplate to further ensure the sustainability of the product. Our team was happy to present the latest updates on this development during ADF.
ArcelorMittal’s co-development offer brings together advanced R&D capabilities, cutting-edge digital tools, and deep industry expertise to help customers meet evolving packaging challenges.
By collaborating closely, we support lightweighting efforts using high-strength steels, develop innovative coatings and packaging solutions, and optimise manufacturing processes for efficiency and sustainability. Our advanced digitalisation tools, such as 3D scanning, Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and modeling, significantly reduce development time and enhance product performance, enabling faster time-to-market and minimised trial-and-error.
From reliable, lightweight steel closures to sustainable 3-piece can bodies, our R&D team is here to create tailored solutions that balance performance, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.

The Aerosol and Dispensing Forum (ADF) is the world’s only annual event dedicated to driving innovation, business, and knowledge in the global aerosol and dispensing sector. ADF is held as part of Paris Packaging Week. In addition to ADF, Paris Packaging Week includes separate events dedicated to packaging for personal care (PCD) and the premium drinks sector (PLD).
