Are we on the way to discover the “Steve jobs” for Packaging?
Brilliant ideas are everywhere. Especially amongst youngsters and students. With their vivid imagination and fresh vision of life, they are open to new perspectives. And who knows… maybe one of them is the next inventor of the century, creating the food packaging of tomorrow that will completely change our way of consuming packaged food?
Reshaping the Packaging’s world
Organized jointly by ArcelorMittal Europe’s Packaging and Global R&D divisions, the Steel2Pack challenge is geared towards students with engineering or design backgrounds. The aim is to have them think outside the box and imagine the future packaging for food, using 100% steel or largely relying on it.
Their proposal must respond to at least one of the 3 objectives that are influencing food packaging design:
- Fitting new lifestyles
- Improving the customer experience
- Improving differentiation and thus making it stand out on the shelf
It’s quite simple: be creative, think practical, functional, beautiful. And above all, think outside the box!
A 3-step challenge
The candidates, in small teams of two to three people, have almost 4 months - from February to June 2019 - to find a new concept, a breakthrough innovation that might revolutionize the packaging of tomorrow. They will be judged by a jury composed of professionals from ArcelorMittal’s Global R&D and Packaging divisions.
The students have until April 3rd to find their concept and submit it to the jury. Then, 30 teams will be selected to continue to the next step and will be granted one more month (until May 3rd) to go deeper into their project and refine it. During that step they will be helped and mentored by our colleagues from Global R&D and Packaging.
Finally, 3 shortlisted teams will be announced on May 13th and they will all be invited to the finals in Luxembourg to pitch and defend their concept in front of the jury.
The happy winners will be rewarded with a trip to London including a visit to the ArcelorMittal Orbit. This on top of the opportunity to see their idea developed and become real!
There may as well be some rough diamonds amongst these students, who are eager to shine but just need a little help and advice, and some polishing, to become glittering diamonds.
Let’s see what the students have in store and may the best concept win!
