After the successful two editions of the packaging webinar on sustainable steel closures for the packaging industry and on the subject of smart and slim 3-piece can bodies held in partnership with The Canmaker, we were happy to offer you the third session where we dived deeper into ArcelorMittal's solutions for steel packaging lightweighting.

Our speakers Gilles Mangin and Laura Rigoni Medeiros from ArcelorMittal Global R&D hosted on 15 May 2025 at 3:30pm CET an informative 30 minutes session followed by an interactive 15 minutes Q&A.

Reducing steel usage per packaging unit has long been a strategic challenge—one that is now more critical than ever, as thinner steel means greater sustainability and lower carbon intensity. ArcelorMittal is deeply committed to supporting its customers in this transition, leveraging advanced Finite Element Analysis expertise and a broad portfolio of high strength steels.

This presentation explored various lightweighting scenarios across multiple applications, highlighting recent achievements such as the easy-open end, the aerosol bottom, and the deep-drawn can. Additionally, we provided insights into the metallurgical strategies that ensure lighter steel packaging maintains its integrity. The discussion emphasized the importance of accurate forming laws that replicate real-life conditions in computerised modelling.

Thank you to everybody who joined the webinar where our speakers shared their expertise on steel packaging lightweighting and demonstrated how ArcelorMittal’s innovations can support the tinplate canmaking and filling industry—from initial concept to full industrial implementation.
