Expanded/Shaped

Product advice on steels to be used for:
Important specification
  • Weldability
  • Flanging ability
  • Expansion ability
Recommendation

For three-piece (3P) aerosols, the welded bodies must have the strength needed to resist a vacuum at the beginning of the filling process. That requires a minimum steel thickness of around 0.17 mm, whichever grade is selected.

The expansion rate required to create the can body may define the steel grade to be utilised. ArcelorMittal has developed several grades specifically for expansion. They exhibit a high n-value and tighter range for the r-value.

For expansion rates over 15%, TS245EX to TS260EX or Creasteel® are mandatory. Higher gauges are also required. Passivation 311 is the most widely used but Passivation 300 is possible if improved wettability is required.

Metallic coating: Tin coating only (ECCS not weldable).
